I walked through a field a few days ago, looked down, and scared myself by thinking I saw a snake just in front of my feet. As I looked a little closer, I saw it was a rope.
It’s of course the classic snake and rope story, and I got to see that it can literally happen.
I saw something. The mind put an image of a snake on it, and additional stories of what could happen, what it would mean, and so on, and it scared itself. And then the rope was recognized as a rope and harmless.
And that’s how it is with life in general. Something happens. The mind puts images and stories on top of it, and sometimes makes itself scared. And if these images and stories are inquired into, it may be revealed as something quite different – and, as with the rope and snake, inherently harmless.
