I am staying at a friend of a friend’s house in Marin, and he has a large mask collection on the wall – from many different cultures and traditions. Some of these are actively used by him at different events.
It reminds me that masks can be seen as hiding something, and are sometimes used this way.
They can be used to reveal something, to bring something out.
And they can do both. They can hide our ordinary and conventional identity. And this may free us up to reveal other identities in us, other ways of being in the world. It’s quite beautiful, and perhaps one of the reasons why masks play such a big role in many traditional cultures around the world.
