News: Pope washes the feet of Muslims

That this is even news says something about how Christianity has strayed.

Update: I should clarify this since I realize it can be misunderstood.

What Pope Francis is doing here, washing the feet of Muslims, is clearly in the spirit of Jesus. As Matthew Fox said, Pope Francis is the first Christian pope we have had in a long time.

And if washing the feet of Muslims – metaphorically or literally – is news, that shows how far Christianity has strayed from its roots. Much of what counts as Christianity today – and especially the more narrow minded and bigoted varitieies – is far from in the Spirit of Jesus.

  1. I would suggest the word ‘evolved’, instead of ‘strayed’, which has a negative connotation. Pope Francis has been the best thing that has happened to the Catholic Church in a very long time. His papacy was necessary to revitalize and modernize the institution, and break up the rigid doctrines that were alienating it’s own people who had moved on in many issues – birth control, abortion, gay marriage, etc.
I was brought up Catholic, but from a young age could never reconcile it’s teaching of the ‘one true church’. I left as a teen and never returned.
I applaud Pope Francis for his efforts to spread the message that Catholics should demonstrate love, compassion and respect for all people, regardless of faith. Perhaps his example will trigger a similar ‘awakening’ in the Muslim world.

  2. I meant that what the current pope is doing is in the spirit of Jesus, and that if washing the feet of Muslims is *news* it shows how far Christianity has strayed from its roots. (Much of what counts for Christianity in the US is not Christian at all, in my view.) As someone said, Pope Francis is the first Christian pope they have had in a long time.
