Ecopsychology and inquiry

 

Inquiry can easily be used in an ecopsychology context.

Specifically how depends on the person and his or her situation.

For people concerned about our current ecological situation, we can look at fear, stress, a sense of inadequacy etc.

For people worried they are not doing enough, we can look at guilt, shame, fear, and commands to do more (or less!).

For people caught up in us vs them thinking, we can look at identities and perceived boundaries creating this sense of division and separation.

For people who want to experience a deeper connection with nature, we can look at identities with a charge that creates a sense of separation.

There is no end to possibilities. It would be fun to do a workshop on this one day. It could perhaps be combined with Practices to Reconnect developed by Joanna Macy.

A brief outline of a workshop:

Introductions. One activity from PtR.

Overview of inquiry.

Elements making up our experience (sensations + imaginations).

What happens when there is a charge on imaginations. (Sensations lending a sense of charge to imaginations.)

How it can help us. (Reduce stress and reactivity. More clarity, sense of us.)

Inquiry on fear, guilt, shame.

PtR activity.

Inquiry on a sense of separation, us vs. them.

Inquiry on a sense of separation, me vs. nature (ecosystems, future generations).

PtR activity.

For people concerned about our current situation:

Stress and fear about our current ecological situation, our future, and how animals, humans, and ecosystems are currently treated. Example: Threats in images of destruction of ecosystems, wastelands, suffering.

A sense of inadequacy, powerlessness, hopelessness, sadness, grief, anger about our current situation. Examples: Identities as not good enough, powerless, helpless. Threats in feeling sadness, grief, anger.

Commands to act in a certain way, to do more. Commands for others to “get it” and act in a certain way.

Shame, guilt, and fear around not doing enough and acting in ways we know are not good for the Earth.

Anger and fear about how politicians and others seem to neglect sustainability. (Although it’s perhaps the biggest issue of our time.)

Any sense of separation between me and them, we and them. (We as those who get it, and them as those who don’t get it.)

For anyone who wants to deepen their sense of connection with nature:

Charged identities that create a sense of separation with non-human animals, ecosystems, future generations, and Earth as a whole. Anything that seems to hinder our sense of “we” to include all life and the Earth as a whole. Examples: I am a human being. I am a man/woman. I am an activist. Any imagined boundary. Any sense of “otherness”.
