A few things about conditioning…

It seems that everything within form is conditioned. It follows habits, patterns, laws. And everything has infinite causes, stretching back to beginning of time and out to the furthest reaches of the universe.

In our human lives, most conditioning is essential for our survival and functioning. Our bodies are conditioned to pump blood, breathe, regulate temperature, fight off diseases and so on. We eat when we are hungry. We fight or flee in danger. We learn and use a verbal language for communication with ourselves and others. We learn and follow (mostly) social norms which makes a functioning society possible.

There is also another form of conditioning, and that is the habit of taking stories as true and identifying as something within content of experience. This habit creates a number of other habits, secondary to the initial one, and we can explore these through a simple question: What happens when I believe [any story]?

The first form is conditioning makes up nearly all of the conditioning in our lives and is mostly very functional as is, although in some cases, some refinement and modification can be helpful.

The second form is what teachers and traditions talk about, and although it is a tiny percentage of all conditioning, it has a big impact on our lives. It is what creates the appearance of a separate I and all the drama that follows.

Sometimes, it can be helpful to explore the primary conditioning of taking a story – including that of a me, doer, observer – as true. This goes to the core of that conditioning, and by bringing attention to it and its dynamics, there is the possibility for it to soften and eventually fall away.

Other times, it can be helpful to work with the secondary effects of that basic conditioning. It is first aid and doesn’t go to the core of the mistake, but still has its place.
