It seems helpful to acknowledge the validity of my own stressful stories before questioning them.

That acknowledgment in itself is a relief. And it can include a simple inquiry, to take it one step further.

For instance…..

Even though you have ruined your life, are you still here, breathing?

This is an antidote to the tendency I see in myself to jump into questioning my stressful thoughts, and skipping this first step of acknowledgment. The stressful story does have some validity, and it is a relief to admit it. Also, it does come from love, and it’s helpful to recognize that too. It’s innocent and from confused love. Its intention is to protect, help and support this imagined me.

I notice that it’s helpful to acknowledge the validity of my own stressful stories before questioning them.
