The Delphic Oracle: Bidden or not bidden, God is present

Vocatus atque non vocatus deus aderit / Bidden or not bidden, God Is present

– The Delphic Oracle, inscribed by Jung above the entrance to his house in Kusnacht

I wrote a brief post about this quote some years ago and revisited it since it received a comment. I thought I would add a few words to it now since I didn’t do it then.

I agree with the comment: Whether you call Him or not God is with you.

Or, as I would say: Whether you call Her or not, God is with – and within – you.

ALL IS THE DIVINE

In one sense, all is the divine. All is the divine taking all of these forms. It’s all the divine expressing, exploring, and experiencing itself as all of it and in always new ways. This is what some call Lila.

ALL APPEARS AS CONSCIOUSNESS

In another sense, to us all appears as the divine since, to us, all happens within and as the consciousness we are. It all takes on the characteristics of the divine to us. This is the small or psychological understanding of awakening.

GOD IS WITH US ALWAYS

In a more conventional sense, the divine – God – is with us always, whether we notice or not. This is what most forms of spirituality talk about.

THE PRESENCE OF THE DIVINE

Also, it is different when I intentionally connect with the divine – through prayer, meditation, and other practices. For me, two that stand out are the Christ meditation and Heart prayer. The presence is palpable.

THE VALIDITY IN EACH OF THESE

To me, all of these are valid.

Within the realm of space and time and stories, we can see all of existence as the play of the divine.

To myself, in my immediate experience, I am consciousness, the world happens within and as the consciousness I am so it inevitably appears as consciousness, and that consciousness has the qualities many of us associate with the divine.

The divine is with us always, as most forms of spirituality talk about.

Through spiritual practices, the presence of the divine becomes more palpable and comes into the foreground.
