

We are blessed to have very little light pollution in our area, outside the town of Barichara. On a moonless night, the sky is dark and filled with stars.
At the same time, there seems to be very little awareness of the many problems of light pollution in this area, and I suspect we will get more of it.
So how do we deal with light pollution on the land we are stewards of? It’s not very difficult. I keep the outside lights off at night unless we need them on for a few minutes for a specific purpose. Also, they are shielded so they don’t send light upwards. (Others here are not so concerned about light pollution and want to keep the lights on even when not needed for practical purposes, so there is some friction around this.)
What needs to happen in the community? Education is one place to start, although it’s not going to do much in itself. Regulation would help, although it seems there is little regulation about anything here so it would require culture change.
