I thought I would share an apparent ghost experience since it happened again last night.
It’s the sound of someone hitting a rock with a sledgehammer, and it happens in the middle of the night and at a regular slow interval. (The one last night was more the sound of the ground being hit by a pickaxe.) It seems to come from about 50 meters away. It’s a clear and loud sound, and we both – my wife and I – hear it. When I decide to get up to see what it is, it stops. It often returns when I go back to bed and turn off the lights. It repeats over several nights. And we can’t find any normal explanation for it since there is nobody there to make the sound.
This has happened over several years now and at three different locations.
NORWAY 2020
In December 2020, my future wife (AL) and I were staying in the guest house at my parents’ property outside of Oslo, Norway. It’s a small log cabin and we can easily hear sounds from the outside.
The neighbors to the east, close to the guest house, had been an older couple who died some years earlier, their son had taken over the house, and he had died recently. The house had been demolished one or two weeks earlier and they were working on the foundations of a new house.
At night, around 2:30-3:00, we would wake up to the sound of a hammer or sledgehammer hitting a rock. The sound came at a regular interval of a few seconds apart. It seemed to come from about 50 meters away, from the neighbor’s property and was very clear. As soon as I decided to get up to see what it was, it would immediately stop. This happened over several nights.
We channeled, using tools from Vortex Healing, and after a good amount of work, it was again quiet at night.
BARICHARA 2021
In December of 2021, we rented a house on the northeastern outskirts of the town of Barichara. Here too, we would wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of a sledgehammer hitting a rock, about 50 meters away from what seemed to be inside the forest. Here too, it repeated over several nights, and it would stop as soon as I decided to get up to see what it was. We did get a sound recording of it, for what that’s worth.
MILAGROS 2024
We are now staying in my wife’s father’s bedroom on Milagros, outside of Barichara. It’s a large property and the neighbors are several hundred meters away. Last night, we heard the sound again. This time, it sounded more like a pickaxe hitting the ground, at the same slow interval as the other times. We got up to check (and close the window), and it stopped. We went back to bed, and it resumed. The sound came from a few tens of meters away, as before, from a wilderness area with no people.
Writing this, I realize that this has happened at this time of year each time.
AN EARLIER EXPERIENCE: SAN FRANCISCO 2016
I am reminded of another and earlier experience that involved sounds at night.
In November 2016, my then-partner (HF) and I were dog-sitting in a new apartment in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. At night, after going to bed and turning off the lights, we would hear sounds from the kitchen – just a few meters away and around the corner from an open door.
What we heard was a repeat of sounds from earlier in the day: the faucet being turned on, Sheila’s ball bouncing on the floor, Sheila lapping up water from her water bowl, and so on. (Sheila was the dog.)
We all three heard it. Sheila slept in the bed, and she would bolt up, get standing fur, and bark at the kitchen.
As soon as I decided to get up to see, the sound would stop.
This happened over several nights. I asked more senior Vortex Healers for assistance, and it all quieted down after some channeling.
When I checked my initial post on this, I saw that this too happened at the same time of year, in November.
WHAT MAY IT BE?
What’s going on? I don’t know.
For the three most recent instances, it’s the same clear and recognizable sound. My wife and I have both heard it each time. There is no normal explanation for it. It goes away when we decide to check on it, and often comes back when we return to bed and turn off the light. It seems to happen at this time of year. The sound comes from a piece of land empty of people. (An empty lot, a forest.) And it has now happened in three different locations.
The earlier experience in San Francisco fits the same general pattern. It was a repeating sound. (In this case a repeating set of sounds.) It happened at night. The three of us heard it. (My then-partner, the dog, and me.) It would stop as soon as I decided to get up to check about it. And it happened over several nights.
Each time, two or three of us have heard it, and we even have a recording, so it’s not something we imagine. We can find no normal explanation for it.
UPDATE JANUARY 2025
It’s January 29, 2025, and I am back in Norway and received an update from Barichara.
My father-in-law has now heard this sound, in the middle of the night, for three nights in a row. The first and second night, he got close to no sleep because of it. The third night, he heard it only three times.
He is sleeping in his bedroom, which is where we most recently heard it. We had not told him anything about our experiences.
We also have someone (D) coming once a week to help us with cleaning the house. Last night, she heard the same sound in the middle of the night. She was so terrified she could not get out of her bed. At the same time, her daughter screamed from a nightmare.
It seemed that the ghost, or whatever it is, followed me and/or my wife for a while, and is now following other people.
UPDATE FEBRUARY 2025
It’s February 11, 2025, and I am told that my father-in-law hears the ghost (he calls it a spirit) most nights. It’s keeping him awake. He gets up to ask the spirit to let him sleep.
It’s the day after. I asked him for more details. He hears it from exactly the area we heard it, and it’s the same sound he describes. As I mentioned earlier, we had not told him about it before he started hearing it for himself.
