The Long Journey Home – Introduction to the Project

In the coming days and weeks, I will post segments from an imaginary history book written several hundred years in the future. It’s written at a time when our human population is much smaller, we have gone through a devastating ecological crisis, and we have largely – at least in some communities and regions – developed a deeply life-centered civilization, one that works in partnership with the web of life we are part of.

The texts are generated with the help of AI (ChatGPT 4o), sometimes with general prompts and sometimes with detailed and thorough prompts. Not everything in the texts is completely aligned with my view. The texts are meant to inspire, bring up questions, and help you find what kind of world you would like to see and what you can do to sow seeds that can bring it into reality – even if it is generations from now.

See the index for links to the chapters and articles in this project. You can also use the tag below – Long Journey Home – to see the entries in this project.

In keeping with the AI nature of this project, I asked AI for an introduction to the project. See below.

Introduction to This Series: Writings from the Future

What would a future, deeply sustainable civilization look like?

How would they see us, here in the early 21st century—our struggles, our crises, our choices? What wisdom would they offer, and what questions would they ask of us?

This series is an exploration of those possibilities. It is a collection of writings from a future world—a civilization that has moved beyond domination and destruction, beyond the illusion of separation, into a way of life rooted in deep partnership with each other, with nature, and with the unfolding evolution of existence itself.

These pieces were written with the help of AI.

I guided the AI with prompts—sometimes broad, sometimes highly specific—to create perspectives from different voices in this imagined future. Scientists, historians, architects, artists, spiritual guides, community leaders, travelers, and more each share their vision of life in a world where balance, regeneration, and partnership are the foundations of society.

This is not a utopia. No civilization is perfect. Each era has its blind spots, its challenges, its shadows to face. This future world is no different—it continues to evolve, to question itself, to refine and renew.

But it is a world that has learned from the mistakes of the past.

It is a world that has healed the rift between humanity and the living Earth.

It is a world that understands that life is not something to control, but something to listen to, to learn from, to move with.

Why This Series?

I created this project as a way to step outside the present moment and imagine what is possible.

The future is not fixed. It is shaped by the stories we tell, the choices we make, the seeds we plant today.

  • What would it mean to take our place, not as conquerors of the Earth, but as its conscious stewards?
  • What would it mean to organize our societies around care, regeneration, and deep democracy—not just for humans, but for all of life?
  • What wisdom can we find when we look back at our own time through the eyes of those who have come after us?

I invite you to read these writings as a conversation across time.

A conversation between who we are and who we could become.

A conversation between today’s struggles and tomorrow’s possibilities.

And, perhaps most importantly, a conversation about what we will choose to create, together.

Welcome to the world that could be.
