The Universe Story can help us notice our nature

When I was involved with the Center for Sacred Sciences (in the 2000s), some things seemed slightly odd to me.

One of these was when I asked one of the teachers why they didn’t include the Universe Story in their program. A perfectly reasonable answer would be that they wanted to limit their focus to the essentials, or that they are not very familiar with the Universe Story. Both were probably true.

Instead, he said that there is no exit door in the Universe Story, meaning that it has no door into noticing our nature.

To me, it seems a bit different.

In the Universe Story, we see ourselves as local expressions of the movements and evolution of the Cosmos and Existence as a whole.

Everything about us – thoughts, feelings, choices, our life – has infinite causes stretching back to the beginning of time (if there is a beginning) and the widest extent of existence (if there is a widest existence).

For anything related to this human self, I can find one more cause, and one more.

In my experience, when I examine that thoroughly and over time, it softens or releases identification with this human self including ideas of a doer, observer, and so on.

It shifts me into noticing what I more fundamentally am, which is this awake space content of experience happens within and as.

Continuing to notice, I find I am even more fundamentally capacity for all of it. I am capacity for this awake space forming itself into this whole field of experience.

To me, that’s one exit door, and it’s not so difficult to find others.
