Someone has been killed, and I have done it, although I don’t know who it was or how or why. I am among a group of people interviewed by an investigator. She interviews me briefly and moves on to the next person. As I am about to leave, I cannot find my shoes and look for them. Apparently, it was a trap set by the investigator and in the process of looking for the shoes, I revealed myself. She emerges and tells me they know it was me.
This was an unusual and uncomfortable dream, bordering on a nightmare.
As I woke up, I sensed it was connected with a meeting today with the realtor, the ones buying the house, and my brother. The realtor and my family have been frustrated and annoyed that I have taken too long getting the house ready for sale. I have felt like a kind of criminal as I imagine how they see me. I have felt squeezed between want to do as much as possible as fast as possible, having to do it slowly because of my chronic illness (CFS), and the pressure I have sensed from them.
This is clearly an issue for me. I feel very uncomfortable when I go against the wishes of others, even if there are good reasons for doing so, and even if I am taking care of myself by doing so.
Since that was so present for me on waking up, it may be connected with the dream.
In the dream, I have murdered someone, although I don’t know who or when or why. This is clearly far away from my conscious identity or how I would like to see myself. At the same time, I know I have everything in me I see in others and the wider world. I am capable of that too, in an extreme enough situation, as just about everyone is.
More to the point, the dream reflects that I have metaphorically murdered a part of myself. Maybe the discomfort of going against the wishes of others? I may have cut off that discomfort instead of taking a closer look and finding more clarity and freedom around it.
Also, I sometimes go into an avoidance dynamic to avoid confrontation and discomfort. That’s another way the murder happens. I metaphorically murder the part of me that wants a more engaged and clear interaction. I murder the possibility to act in a more healthy way, face my fears, strengthen a more healthy pattern, and whatever else transforms and shifts by doing it.
I don’t know the circumstances of the murder, so that cutting off (the metaphorical murder) happened outside of my conscious awareness.
The investigator is a truth-seeking part of me, and one that seems perceptive and insightful. She set a trap for me, and it worked. The truth was revealed.
Why am I the murderer and not someone else? Likely so it will be more direct, obvious, and visceral, and sets me up to more easily own it.
It may also reflect that the metaphorical murder is something I do consciously, by joining in with certain parts of me and their painful stories, even if I am unaware of how the actual murder happens.
Spoiler: The dream is similar to The Iron Chariot (Jernvognen) by Sven Elvestad and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie where the one telling the story is the murderer. Jernvognen happens to be one of my favorite NRK radio theater plays from childhood.

AI Interpretation of the Dream
I gave ChatGPT 4o the brief dream description above.
That’s a powerful and psychologically rich dream. Here’s one possible interpretation, drawing from Jungian and archetypal perspectives:
The murder
The killing may symbolize a part of yourself that has been “eliminated”—perhaps unconsciously. In dreams, death often signifies transformation or the repression of a part of the psyche. You don’t know who, how, or why, which suggests that the “act” was hidden even from your conscious self. This could relate to disowning an aspect of your identity, silencing a deep truth, or suppressing a powerful emotion or instinct (like anger, desire, or grief).
The investigation
The group setting and interviews suggest a collective context—maybe your role in a community, family, or inner landscape of selves. The investigator is an archetype of conscience, intuition, or the inner truth-seeker. The fact that she doesn’t linger on you at first could reflect how skillfully this truth has been hidden—by you—from yourself.
The missing shoes
Shoes symbolize groundedness, readiness to move forward, or your way of being in the world. Losing them suggests vulnerability, being exposed, or not being ready to take the next step. The act of searching for them, unknowingly triggering the trap, is key: in trying to reorient yourself or reclaim something lost, you inadvertently reveal what’s been buried.
The trap and revelation
The trap could symbolize the inner mechanisms of self-revelation. It may be that a deeper truth within you has been waiting to emerge. The investigator’s declaration—“we know it was you”—can be read as a moment of psychological confrontation. It’s not necessarily about guilt, but about ownership: a hidden part of you is now seen.
Overall themes
- A buried truth or shadow aspect is coming into the light.
- A transformation has occurred within you, possibly involving loss, suppression, or change.
- You’re in a process of being “found out”—by yourself.
- You may be ready to integrate something previously repressed.
