Just about any time I look at the news, even relatively good news sources like The Guardian, I see reporters not doing their job.
They report on the drop in visitors to the US and like to mention tariffs as a reason, since that is the most innocent-sounding one. They forget to mention the far more serious backdrop: Most people don’t want to visit a country… Whose leader threatens to take their country (Canada) or part of their land (Denmark/Europe). Whose leader regularly uses blackmail and threats to get the upper hand in negotiations with other countries. Where a majority elects an authoritarian with fascist dreams. Or where tourists can be thrown in for-profit immigration prison for the most ridiculous reasons and have to endure inhumane conditions indefinitely without access to legal representation.
They report on Gaza without mentioning genocide, the real extent of the horrors, and that it’s systematic and supported by several Western states.
They report on climate change and don’t mention that it’s just one of many expressions of a far more serious issue – global ecological overshoot. They report on it as an inconvenience and not as the inevitable end of civilization and humanity – unless we find the collective will to make a dramatic course change.
