Simple pointers I find helpful

Some pointers are especially alive for me these days – to bring the noticing of my nature more into the foreground, or to help shift out of being caught up in this personality and his hangups.

I also like to scan the field of experience and explore whatever seems most contracted, or whatever seems most like I, me, an observer, or a doer, in this way.

Here are some I tend to use these days:

It’s an object. This experience – this thought/emotion dynamic, this discomfort – is an object. It’s not what I fundamentally am. It’s within the field of experience as anything else. It comes and goes as any other experience. It happens within and as what I am.

It’s made up of what I am. It’s made of the same as me. It’s this awake space taking this form. It’s the consciousness I am taking this form.

This is what life wants to experience now. Of all possible experiences, this is the one life wants to have here and for now. It has top priority for existence here and now.

How is it to meet it with kindness? If I experience discomfort, or this human self is struggling or upset, then how is it to meet it with kindness? How is it to meet it as I would a scared child or animal? How is it to be with it, allowing it to be as it is?

Notice and allow. If there is distress or discomfort, how is it to notice and allow? You are welcome here. Stay as long as you want. How is it to notice it’s already noticed and allowed, and align with that?

The words in bold are usually what I use as a pointer. Sometimes, I may use a few more words, and otherwise it’s mostly wordless noticing. And I sometimes use other pointers, depending on what comes up and what I am curious about. What works and is most helpful tends to change over time, and may be different for each situation, so it’s good to have a repertoire to draw from.

These pointers are helpful since they match where I am, and they say something about where I am in the process: I am relatively familiar with the terrain through noticing and structured inquiry, and I still need some support to bring my nature to the foreground of attention and help me shift out of being caught up in wounded parts of this human self.

At another time, and for someone else at a different place in their process, other pointers may work better.
