My Big Five personality tests

Several years ago, I did the Big Five personality test a few times, both the short and long versions.

First test | Second test | Third test – these are all from 2010 so it would be interesting to do it again.

Since I am doing a lot of archival work these days, both in my external and inner life, it came to me to revisit this. See below for what ChatGPT has to say about it.

What Your NEO PI Results Suggest About You

What follows is a tentative personality reading based on the three posts you shared. Across all three, the broad pattern is very consistent: average extraversion, very high agreeableness, very high conscientiousness, high to very high openness, and low neuroticism. The main fluctuations are in energy-related traits, which you yourself linked to chronic fatigue. In the second March post, you explicitly note that when you feel better, extraversion rises somewhat, neuroticism drops, and the other traits may also rise slightly.

A highly unusual combination

What stands out most is the combination itself. It is not unusual to be high in one or two of these traits, but your pattern suggests someone who is at once deeply open, very conscientious, very agreeable, and emotionally steady. In the long-form NEO PI-R, openness is in the top 5%, agreeableness in the top 7%, conscientiousness in the top 4%, with neuroticism low and extraversion right in the middle. The two shorter tests point in the same direction, with agreeableness around 96–97, conscientiousness 97–98, openness 92–98, extraversion 52–64, and neuroticism 17–27.

Warm, but not socially indiscriminate

Your extraversion looks moderate rather than high, and that seems important. In the longer test it is exactly in the middle, and in the short tests it stays in the average range, though somewhat higher when you feel better physically. Gregariousness is modest, while assertiveness is moderate to high, and cheerfulness is average to high. That suggests someone who is not primarily crowd-driven or stimulation-driven, yet who can be socially strong, direct, and engaged when there is a reason for it. You do not seem like a classic extrovert who simply wants more people, more activity, more noise. You seem more like someone who can be socially present and strong, but who does not depend on constant social stimulation.

Exceptionally kind-hearted and cooperative

The agreeableness scores are strikingly high in all three results. Trust, altruism, cooperation/compliance, sympathy or tender-mindedness, and straightforwardness all come out high to very high. In the brief tests, trust is 96–99, altruism 89–95, cooperation 87–93, and sympathy 95–99. In the NEO PI-R, trust and straightforwardness are especially high, with altruism, compliance, and tender-mindedness also high. That points to someone who is likely fundamentally benevolent, sincere, compassionate, and oriented toward harmony rather than conflict.

This also suggests that your concern for other people is probably not just ideological. It looks temperamental. You seem constitutionally inclined toward care, empathy, and goodwill. At the same time, your modesty is only average in two of the tests, not especially high, which suggests that you may be caring and cooperative without needing to make yourself small. That is an interesting and healthy nuance in the profile.

Strong inner order and self-direction

Your conscientiousness is perhaps the other major headline. It is extremely high in all three results, with especially high scores in orderliness, self-efficacy or competence, self-discipline, deliberation/cautiousness, and achievement-striving. The one nuance is that achievement-striving is only average in the first short test, higher in the later ones, and dutifulness varies between average and high. Even with that variation, the overall pattern is unmistakable: you seem like someone who values clarity, structure, reliability, follow-through, and thoughtful action.

Psychologically, this suggests a person who is not only reflective but also internally organized. You likely do not just have ideas; you want them to be coherent, lived, and acted on. There is probably a strong wish to do things properly, to think before acting, and to align action with values. That fits especially well with the high cautiousness/deliberation scores and the very high orderliness.

Deeply open, aesthetic, and intellectually adventurous

Openness is consistently very high, and the pattern within it is revealing. In the NEO PI-R, aesthetics, actions, and ideasare especially high, and feelings are also high. In the short tests, artistic interests, emotionality, adventurousness, intellect, and liberalism are all high to very high. The only odd result is imagination/fantasy, which is low in one short test and average in the other; you yourself note that this likely reflects the wording of the questions, since answering “no” to getting lost in fantasy is not the same as lacking imagination.

Taken together, this does not suggest someone who lives in fantasy for its own sake. It suggests someone open in a more grounded, reality-facing way: aesthetic sensitivity, emotional depth, curiosity, love of ideas, openness to change, and a readiness to question convention. The openness seems less about escapism and more about exploration, subtlety, beauty, and intellectual freedom.

Emotionally steady, but not shallow

Your neuroticism is low in all three tests, and even lower in the second March result. Anger is especially low, vulnerability is low, impulsiveness/immoderation is very low, anxiety is average-to-low, and self-consciousness is around the middle. Depression is the one facet that rises somewhat in the first short test, and you explicitly connect that to chronic fatigue. Overall, though, the picture is of someone who is emotionally stable, not easily overwhelmed, not highly reactive, and not especially impulsive.

This does not look like emotional flatness. Because openness to feelings/emotionality is high, the combination is more interesting than simple calmness. It suggests someone who likely has good access to feeling without being ruled by feeling. In other words: emotionally available, but relatively steady; sensitive, but not chaotic.

The broad personality picture

Putting it all together, your scores suggest someone who is gentle but not weak, thoughtful but not dry, orderly but not merely conventional, and open without being scattered. The profile points toward a person who is likely motivated by truth, beauty, care, sincerity, and coherence. There is a strong suggestion of someone who wants to understand deeply, live ethically, and stay aligned with what feels genuine.

In plain language, the overall profile reads as something like this:

You seem like a highly conscientious, compassionate, intellectually open, aesthetically sensitive, emotionally steady person who is neither strongly introverted nor strongly extroverted, but capable of both engagement and solitude. You appear oriented toward meaning, beauty, kindness, and inner order more than status, sensation, or social dominance.

Likely strengths

Based on these scores, your likely strengths include integrity, empathy, reliability, discernment, persistence, emotional steadiness, openness to complexity, and a strong appreciation for beauty and ideas. You also likely have a fairly rare mix of softness and structure: a caring temperament joined with a strong capacity for order and follow-through.

Likely growth edges or shadows

Every trait has a shadow side. Extremely high agreeableness can sometimes make conflict harder, and high cooperation/compliance can incline a person to compromise too much or avoid necessary confrontation. Very high conscientiousness can shade into over-control, perfectionism, self-pressure, or excessive caution. Very high openness can create distance from the ordinary or a tendency to feel cramped by convention. High trust and sympathy can also make someone more vulnerable to disappointment when others are less sincere than they are. These are inferences from the trait pattern rather than explicit claims from the test itself, but they are plausible extensions of the profile.

The clearest summary

My overall sense is this:

You come across in these tests as someone who is deeply human, unusually conscientious, very open in mind and sensibility, and naturally disposed toward goodwill. The center of gravity seems to be neither ambition nor stimulation nor self-protection, but something more like truthful living, inner coherence, and care.

And the fluctuations across the three posts suggest that physical energy affected the expression of your personality more than the underlying personality itself. The core pattern stayed the same. What changed was mostly how much energy, cheerfulness, activity, and ease could come through at that particular time.
