The world is my mirror, and although I tend to consciously live more from the part(s) of me that loves silence, I also have parts with the reverse view.
So why not explore these parts of me? Why not get to know them?
Why not find them here and not just “out there”?
THE WORLD IS MY MIRROR
I see it in the world which means it’s also here. The world is my mirror.
I can take any story about anyone or anything, turn it to myself, and find genuine and specific examples of how it’s true, including in the moment I engage in the initial story about someone or something in the world.
POLARITIES
This is also inevitable in terms of the internal dynamics of the psyche:
If I have one end of a polarity in me, I also have the other.
It’s impossible for one to exist without the other. If the victim is here, the victimizer is too. If the silence lover is here, the noise lover is too.
A DIALOG WITH THE ONE WHO LOVES NOISE
Who am I speaking with?
The one who loves noise.
Why do you love noise?
Noise is amazing. It makes me feel alive. It makes me feel like a lot is happening. (It also makes me forget about some of what’s distressing to me.)
What types of noise do you like?
I like a range of noise. I like loud music. I like loud machines. I like loud movies.
How does P. relate to you?
He is generally not aware of me, although he is right now doing this dialog. He is far more identified with the parts that love silence and quiet sounds.
How do you feel about that?
I feel ignored and overlooked. I am here too. I am as much part of him as anything else, but he is not aware of me. He pretends I am not here. He just sees me in other people and in the world, and when he does, he gets distressed – frustrated, annoyed, angry. It doesn’t make me feel good.
Is he sometimes aware of you?
I remember some instances. One when he was little and loved making noise with firecrackers and cap guns. He loved the little explosions and the noise they made, and even that it sometimes annoyed the adults.
Another more recent when they are working on the large house here and making noise during the construction. He likes the design and the house (he made the basic design), so the noise has associations that he enjoys.
These memories makes him more aware that it’s not really about the noise itself, it’s about his associations and that it rubs up against his identity with the part of him that loves silence.
Do you have any advice for him?
It would be much easier for him to embrace both of us – me who loves noise and the other one who doesn’t. We are equally part of him. We are here. So it would help him to acknowledge and get to know both of us, to see us here and not one here and one out in the world.
When someone is noisy, and he imagines they love noise, he can use it as an opportunity to find that part of him that loves noise.
A DIALOG WITH THE PART THAT SEES THE POLARITY
Who am I speaking with?
I am the part of him that sees and values the polarity. In this case, the noise-silence polarity.
How do you see the polarity of the parts that love noise and silence respectively?
They are equal to each other, they are part of the same polarity and dynamic.
They both have an evolutionary function. They are both flavors of the human experience.
They belong together, and they are not a mistake.
A DIALOG WITH WISDOM
Who am I speaking with?
I am wisdom.
What advice do you have for P.?
Recognize these two parts of you, not just in thought but viscerally. Get to know them as parts of you, as a lived experience. Recognize that they are both here. When you see one in the world, use it as a pointer to find it here in yourself now.
Also, remind yourself that they are two of innumerable parts. They are a small part of a whole ecosystem. They don’t define you. They make up a small part of the richness you are at a human and psychological level.
As you know, they also don’t define you since they happen as content of experience. They come and go as any content of experience. What you are forms itself into the experience of all of it, the always-changing content of experience.
Do you have concrete practical advice for when he gets triggered?
When you notice you get caught up in reaction to noise:
Take a breath. Remove yourself from the situation if you can, or remove the situation from you (earplugs).
Explore how it is to find the part of you that loves noise. What happens when you connect with that view? Does it go against your familiar and beloved identity (as someone who loves quiet)? Does it shift your relationship with the noise?
Do tonglen with the people behind the noise. Does it shift your relationship with them and the noise?
Remind yourself that this too shall pass. It’s temporary. You’ll soon enough be in a different situation.
Remind yourself that the sound itself is neutral. It’s the stories you have about it, the painful stories, that create the reaction and discomfort.
Amplify and release. Make the discomfort as strong as you can for a few seconds, then release. (Make the part of you reacting to the noise as strong as you can for a few seconds, and release.) Repeat a few times. What happens?
Notice what you are – space for the world, capacity for the world.
Notice that the nature of the sound is your nature. Notice the stillness and silence that’s part of your nature. Notice the stillness and silence within the experience. (Explore this when the noise is not here and it will be easier to notice when it’s here.)
Notice you are capacity for it all – the noise, the reactions to it. This content of experience is not what you more fundamentally are. You are more fundamentally what allows it all.
Notice that what you are forms itself into any and all experience that’s here, including the noise and the reactions to it. It’s not something that happens to you. You form yourself into the experience of it.
