Noticing the nature of what’s here

In daily life these days, I notice I tend to…

MY NATURE NOTICING ITSELF

Ask myself, what am I? What am I more fundamentally?

It’s too simple and immediate for words. And if I were to try to reflect it in words… I find I am what this field of experience – everything including anything labeled me and I – happens within and as. It’s all awake space taking all these forms. What I am forms itself into all of it. It’s all dreamlike. There is no inherent center anywhere.

This seems to be my nature noticing itself. It seems always new. It seems always fresh. I cannot find any boundaries or finishing lines.

All of these are questions. All of them are part of curiosity and noticing.

NOTICE THE NATURE OF ANY SENSE OF CENTER

I notice if there is a sense of center anywhere, a sense of a viewpoint, a place there is a looking out from.

What’s the nature of this center? This place? Is it different from the rest?

Is this too what a thought may label awake space? How is it to rest in and as that noticing?

NOTICE ANYTHING THAT SEEMS “CLOSE”

I notice anything that seems “close”, that seems closer to what I am. Maybe a sensation in my throat or forehead. A view I am familiar with. An identity I am familiar with. (Victim, good person, science-oriented, etc.)

What is the nature of this that seems close?

How is it to rest in and as that noticing?

How is it to allow my human conditioning to realign within this noticing?

NOTICING THE NATURE OF CONTRACTIONS

There seems to be a lot of old trauma surfacing these days.

So I notice anything that feels more dense and explore it in a similar way. What is the nature of this contraction? What is it made of? How is it to notice it as awake space like anything else? How is it to rest in and as that noticing?

THROUGHOUT THE DAY

This is a noticing that happens throughout the day.

It happens when this human self sits down to explore this more intentionally and maybe thoroughly.

It happens when this human self walks or does things around the house, or listen to or watches something.

The noticing and exploration goes into the foreground in these cases, and is more in the background at other times, although it seems to always be here.

OTHER APPROACHES

When I notice density and contractions…

I sometimes use elements of the befriend and awaken approach: Thank you for protecting me. Thank you for your love for me. What do you need? What would bring you peace? What is your nature? What is your essence?

I sometimes use tonglen. I visualize another – or myself or parts of me – in front of me. I see their suffering as smoke and inhale that smoke on the in-breath. (Metaphorically absorbing my own shadow, and getting a more visceral sense of how that is.) I breathe out light and see the person filled with light. (Contentment, freedom from suffering.)

There are a lot of tools in the toolbox, although these simple ones seem to be the ones that come to me these days.

SECOND DRAFT

In daily life these days, I notice I tend to…

MY NATURE NOTICING ITSELF

Consciously notice what I am.

I find I am what this field of experience – everything including anything labeled me and I – happens within and as. It’s all awake space taking all these forms. What I am forms itself into all of it. It’s all dreamlike. There is no inherent center anywhere.

This is my nature noticing itself. It’s always new. It’s always fresh. There is no finishing line. There is more resting to do in and as this to allow my human self to reorganize within it. And so on.

There is a lot of old trauma and contractions surfacing.

So I notice anything that feels

Notice anything that feels more dense, any contractions, any old trauma surfacing, and explore that in a similar way. What is the nature of this contraction? What is it made of? How is it to notice it as awake space like anything else? How is it to rest in and as that noticing?

Sometimes, I also use elements of the befriend and awaken approach: Thank you for protecting me. Thank you for your love for me. What do you need? What would bring you peace? What is your nature? What is your essence?

It’s far more simple and immediate than any words.
